Not far from the strong beating heart of Cebu lies a sprawling paradise waiting to be explored. As cheesy as that may sound, it’s just about as accurate as it gets. I’m talking about Papa Kit’s Marina and Fishing Lagoon. A comfortable 30 minutes north of the city, Papa Kit’s has become one of the most favored getaway spots for Cebuanos. With half a dozen things to do in this massive piece of land, it’s pretty easy to see why. They have fishing (which this article will be about), horseback riding, zip-lining, biking and more!

Papa Kit’s is in Liloan. The specific address would be: Silot Bay, Poblacion Liloan, Cebu, but for all those who haven’t the slightest clue where that is (like me) the simpler address would be: turn right at the small light tower near the church and keep an eye out for their sign on the right side.

Once you enter their gates, you’ll have to pay an entrance fee of PHP100.00 per person. That’s really not bad, considering it’s a consumable amount for whatever food and beverages you buy inside. Then, as you enter, you’ll notice there are a bunch of numbered ponds scattered all over the place. These are the catch-and-cook ponds. In these, you’ll be able to catch bangus and/or tilapia and have the option to either have them cooked in the restaurant or take them home with you at a price of PHP180.00/kilo. Pond 5 is usually the pond they let you use, so I suggest you go straight to that one. There’s also a section of the marina where more experienced fishermen can go for the catch-and-release type of fishing, but that’s another story.

You can rent fishing rods at PHP 50.00 for just about as long as you want. Then there’s the “bait” (clumped wet flour) at PHP 10.00 per wad, and lastly the fish lure also at PHP 10.00. That’s a total of just PHP 70.00 for practically a whole afternoon worth of fishing.

Fishing huts are free on the weekdays when the place isn’t packed, but they’ll cost you a few hundred Pesos on weekends when everyone in the area is vying for one.

All in all, it was a great fishing experience. It won’t matter whether you’re 6 or 60 years old, Papa Kit’s is a great place to bring out the Discovery Channel fisherman in everyone!
