We have a New Year’s Resolution tradition in Zerothreetwo. It allow us to tackle the year with renewed focus and gives us a chance to look back and see how we fared for the year.
As we wrote before, 2017 was a year of grinding it out. We wanted giant leaps and big growth, but we were confronted with the reality that it takes time. Slow and steady wins the race, hopefully. As Seth Godin wrote recently, steady is the hard part.
“The hard part is ‘steady.’
Anyone can go slow. It takes a special kind of commitment to do it steadily, drip after drip, until you get to where you’re going.”
Back when we started in 2011, Zerothreetwo was a side project and a fun thing to do. It’s still fun, but it has transitioned into something more than a side project. With any luck, it can make a dent in this world. We’re hoping that slow and steady brings us there.
Let’s see what 2018 brings.
How did we fare compared to our 2017 Resolutions?
Here’s the breakdown of what we promised for 2017:
Continue with what works.
Monday Musings continues to come out every Monday via the newsletter and is still a joy to write. I believe I’ve only missed one Monday this year.
Monday Musings — a set of recommends and thoughts I had that week, subscribe here.
We expanded and varied our blog content this year. I’ve written about it before in a recent blog post called Top Zerothreetwo Articles of 2017. Here’s an excerpt:
“This year, we touched on topics like what it is like to live in our urban jungle, about experiencing a creative life, about extraordinary people doing great things, and, of course, wonderful places to eat.
We’re done chasing cheap pageviews and likes. When someone reads our content, we want them to feel something. If we can excite change, show a better way of living, or even just inspire, we’ll be happy. Blogging about the latest happenings and restaurants wasn’t doing that. Sure, we got plenty of readers because of it, but we weren’t sure we were making a dent. Hopefully with the new content, we are.”
10 more digital marketing partners
We fell short on this one. Turns out that the initial flurry of new partners was short lived. It’s more difficult than anticipated to get new digital marketing partners. The goal was to have fifteen new partners by the time 2017 ended. So far we’re only at six.
But it’s ok. We’re blessed to have wonderful digital marketing partners and we’re looking forward to helping them continue and grow for 2018.
2000 units sold Zerothreetwo Merchandise
This is another goal where we fell short. For 2017, we sold about 1000 pieces of clothing. It’s still an awesome feeling knowing that you are wearing our clothing.
But we’ll try to do better for 2018. More on that below.
It really was a fun year full of experiences. Since blogging encourages you to live your life to the fullest, 2017 was a big year for me. Here are a few examples of the fun I had, I started biking, went on a surf trip, and became a father of two.
So what about 2018?
What resolutions and goals can Zerothreetwo strive for in 2018? It’s not going to be easy. As you can see with our 2017 resolutions, there were quite a few that we didn’t accomplish, but I like to think about failed goals with this quote:
“Sometimes when you aim for the stars, you hit the moon.”
– Ian Holloway
The stars would have been nice, but I’ve never been to the moon either. So I’ll take it anyway.
On to the 2018 resolutions:
500 Monday Musings Subscribers
In 2016, our newsletter account conked out and we lost about 90% of our subscribers. We basically had to start from scratch. In January 2017, we started with 91 subscribers to Monday Musings, we ended the year with 212.
We know that social media is all the rage, but in social it is really noisy. Our links and photos are side by side cat videos, baby pictures, and amazing humans. The newsletter is a way for us to share cool stuff we found on the internet without the noise of social media. We would like to share it with more people.
So the goal for 2018 is to grow the number of Monday Musings subscribers to at least 500 subscribers. Expect to hear more about the newsletter for 2018.
Start a podcast
There I said it. I’m going to start a podcast. I’ll commit to six episodes to start. One episode per week. Then we’ll see how it goes and see from there. If I don’t enjoy doing it or no one cares, then I’ll stop.
We don’t have a name for the podcast yet, but I know what it will be about. We’ll be interviewing local creators, artisans, and entrepreneurs. The goal of which will be to share their stories and give the listener a glimpse into what it is like to live that life. Basically we want to interview people who actually create stuff.
I have a short list of people I would love to have in the podcast. If you know anyone, feel free to suggest.
Last year, the goal was to get more digital marketing clients. For this year, I want to take a different approach. Instead of focusing on getting more clients, we will do better work. Word of mouth and referrals is the life blood of many businesses. Do better work to get more referrals.
We’ll see how it goes.
Release even more clothing
One of the reasons we didn’t reach our 2000 units sold goal is because we didn’t release enough clothing. Last year, we only had eleven releases. For 2018, let’s shoot for twenty releases and lookbooks.
If we can sell 2000 units of clothing a year, that means we can finally open our own full-fledged store. I’ve even written a little wishlist of what I want to have in the store. More on that in the future.
Two more Art Parties
Art Party continues to be part of our calendar plan. It is so much fun and embodies exactly what Zerothreetwo is doing.
If you haven’t been to an Art Party, here’s a little primer:
“Art Party is a multidisciplinary gathering of all things art in Cebu. Think of it as a get together with all your creative friends. Hanging with them is the best, right? While one of them is showing your their photographs, the other lets out a guitar and starts playing, then your dancer friends start improvising with the music, all this is happening while your filmmaker friend takes video in the background. It’s an Art Party!”
Meet the Streets
Every year since 2015, we’ve organized a photowalk called Meet the Streets. This year will be no exception.
When Zerothreetwo stops being fun, that will be the signal to stop what we are doing. For now, this is the easiest part of the equation to solve.
That’s it. Those are our New Year’s Resolutions. To recap, will list them again.
- Grow to 500 Monday Musings Subscribers.
- Start a Podcast and commit to six episodes.
- Commit to better quality content for our Digital Marketing Partners.
- Twenty Releases and Lookbooks to sell 2000 units of clothing.
- Organize two more Art Parties.
- Organize Meet the Streets.
- Have fun!
Bring on 2018!
