We only have a few days left before witnessing the most prestigious pageant in the Queen City of the South. With the Miss Cebu 2013 candidates almost hitting the finish line, they are all experiencing full packed days and an inexplicable ecstatic feeling. ZeroThreeTwo got up close and personal with the twelve lovely candidates.

The schedule of the Miss Cebu candidates have been hectic with non-stop appointments and rehearsals. I dropped by for a surprise interview and asked them a few “random” questions. Some of them turned out to be pro while others struggled a bit. Here’s what the girls had to say – you be the judge and make your bets!

Comment below on who you think will win Miss Cebu 2013.

Beauty over Mind or Mind over Beauty?

If you base it on an anatomical feature, the head is superior.  You also have to think before deciding on anything so it is mind over beauty.

Cite one major social issue in which you can help, if you win Miss Cebu 2013.

As a medical student, my advocacy is focused on health. I also want to help children and in fighting violence against women.

Name a beauty queen who has inspired you in your pursuit to win this year’s pageant.

My sister, Teffanie (Miss Cebu 2011 1st runner-up). I look up to her because she told me that whenever I do things with my heart, I can do anything flawlessly. She asked me what would I do if I knew that I would not fail. I was speechless at that time, but then she uttered, you could do basically everything you want because you know you won’t fail.

What are three interesting things about yourself?

I’m a pianist and I sing. I’m part of a debate team. I also host in our school and in other events.

Arrange friendship, prizes, prestige and experience according to its influence in your decision to join the pageant.

First would be friendship because I got the chance to meet new people. Next would be experience. As a newbie to pageantry, everything is a new thing. I’m really overwhelmed. Prestige comes third because this is such a well-respected pageant. Last would be the prizes. I honestly do not know even know what the prizes are. I’m here because I want to try something new.

Beauty over Mind or Mind over Beauty?

I prefer people calling me smart than pretty. You can make yourself look good, but if you don’t have it in mind then it isn’t really impressive.

What is one big mistake you made in your life and what did you do to make it right?

I wouldn’t consider it a mistake, but rather a challenge because when you talk about mistakes, it is something that you’d regret throughout your life and I don’t regret anything. Joining Miss Cebu is the biggest challenge because, as all of you know, I’m a 5th yr Architecture student and I have my thesis going on. I really didn’t expect to be part of the top 12. Balancing my studies and Miss Cebu is the biggest challenge because I want to graduate and win this as well.

What are three interesting things about you?

I know most of the Filipino folk dances because I’m part of the San Diego Dance Company. So I dance a lot. I don’t know how to ride a bike because I once got a bruise which reminds me of that significant day. Ever since I was a kid, I have had a clown phobia. I once saw this scary movie with a clown villain and that forever haunted me.

One big issue I think that we can focus on is our Education, particularly on Values Education and Human Rights. My grandfather, being a lawyer, used to tell me stories of people’s rights being abused. It is important that we know our rights to know where we stand.

What are three interesting things about yourself?

I can touch my nose with my tongue. I am a Harry Potter lover and I enjoy singing – a lot.

If you were asked by a foreigner to convince him/her to visit Cebu by enumerating three good reasons, what would these reasons be?

Here in Cebu, we can’t deny the fact that God has blessed us with natural beauty like our white sand beaches in Mactan. We are situated in a place which is not only rich in natural beautiful spots, but also an open city to many businesses and growing industries like the BPO. With all the things that are present here in Cebu, why can’t a foreigner be convinced? Right?

Name a beauty queen who has inspired you in your pursuit to win this year’s pageant.

I look up to Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj. I appreciate Venus Raj because she acknowledges where she came from. She is not a pretender and whoever I am, I should not be accepted as a beauty queen but because of who I am. Shamcey Supsup because of her intelligence, the way she handles herself in pageantry and answers the question in a short and concise manner.

Beauty over Mind or Mind over Beauty?

Beauty goes beyond the physical attributes of the person. I think being beautiful deep inside would matter more than being smart. I think beauty isn’t more important because you need to have the heart to share. If you have the heart then you’ll be able to share what you know.

What are three interesting things about youself?

I’ve been trying to gain weight all my life. I used to be into sports, but people don’t believe that because of my body structure. I trained myself to talk a lot because people think I have strong features which make them think I’m maldita.

If Miss Cebu 2013 were to become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Cebu?

I don’t think she should be allowed to continue because before you join the pageant, you already know the rules and regulations. How can you be a good example to everyone if you yourself crossed your line?

What are three interesting things about you?

I’m a boyish type. At first I didn’t like make up because I thought it was tiring and time consuming, but after joining Miss Cebu that changed a bit. I’m a half-Indian, born and raised here in Cebu. My father and I are Catholic. We are very dedicated to Sto. Nino since I also celebrate my birthday this Sinulog (a day after the pageant). I also love to doodle. My planner is very colourful.

If Miss Cebu 2013 were to become pregnant during her reign, should she be allowed to continue as Miss Cebu?

Pregnancy is part of femininity. It’s a normal thing. If I will be in a situation wherein I am Miss Cebu and I become pregnant, I would stand my ground of continuing my pregnancy, but I would be very willing to turn over the crown because I know that it is not allowed for Miss Cebu to be pregnant.

Cite one major social issue in which you can help, if you win Miss Cebu 2013.

My advocacy is to promote gender equality and anti-discrimination of the transgenders. In this modern generation, discrimination against women including gender-based violence, economic discrimination, reproductive health inequities and harmful traditional practices remain the most pervasive and persistent form of inequality. I think that should be given focus now. If I become Miss Cebu, I would do everything in my power to help children and women expand their choices in life.

If you were asked by a foreigner to convince him/her to visit Cebu by enumerating three good reasons, what would these reasons be?

First would be the people because Cebuanos are genuinely friendly and hospitable. Second would be the food because we have the best lechon and delicacies. Lastly, the colorful festivities and beautiful spots like our white beaches.

Beauty over Mind or Mind over Beauty?

It would be Mind over Beauty because beauty is temporary. A person with wisdom could make better choices in life and can have the beauty she desires.

My advocacy is greatly focused on Environmental Awareness. With the natural disasters we have experienced, this calls for environmental preservation and I can help out in encouraging people in taking measures to preserve the environment. My approach would be to have barangay to barangay health teachings.

Arrange friendship, prizes, prestige and experience according to its influence in your decision to join the pageant.

Miss Cebu gives you an experience of a lifetime. It’s not just a road to fame, but allows great personality development and a chance to be better. Next would be friendship because being with the other eleven girls is very important especially because I just graduated and am starting to know a new world. Prestige because who wouldn’t want to win right? Prizes don’t count anymore like going abroad because I can do that if I really want to.

12 Lorens GoyenecheaMary Lorens Goyenechea

What are three interesting things about yourself?

I drive like a man. I’m a professional swimmer. I stopped swimming to join pageants.

Beauty over Mind or Mind over Beauty?

As a Biology student, I believe that my mind makes up my entire personality which would reflect your true beauty so I’d choose mind over beauty.

ZeroThreeTwo would like to thank Jaja Chiongbian-Rama, Anna Quisumbing and Cinbeth Orellano for making this interview possible. Big thanks to the twelve candidates for their time and effort.
