Seems like we are experiencing a resurgence.

Slowly yet surely, quality gigs are starting to pop up around the city. Bands are getting together. Musicians are sharing their art. Recordings are being processed. Music is making their way around the crowd. The only thing lacking as far as I can tell is a legit music venue.

I’ve written a little bit about the Cebu music scene before. All the ingredients are present for a thriving music culture. The soul is there, it just needs guidance from those who have been there before.

That’s where the Cebu Music Creators Growth Summit comes in.

“The Cebu Music Creators Growth Summit is a music conference and workshop designed for the Cebuano music creator. Its main objective is to empower the local music creator and inspire them to hone their craft and equip themselves with the necessary knowledge as musicians in the modern world. The conference also provides a diverse range of workshops and talks with practical ideas that can be incorporated in live performances, music production and music promotion.

The one-day development summit aims to bring together like-minded members of the local music community to discuss and look into the possibility of co-creating a music industry that is highly entrenched and deeply connected with Cebu’s unique local culture. It also provides a platform for musicians to come together, collaborate and perform.

The main message is that local music creators—songwriters, singer-songwriters, composers, arrangers, sound engineers and producers are capable of creating their own opportunities. However with that capability and freedom comes the responsibility of ensuring that the end result will be professionally sound, economically sustainable and creatively inspiring.”

Music is a topic close to my heart. Back when my friends and I were playing gigs around Cebu, there was no blueprint. We weren’t sure what to do and we didn’t know anybody in the scene. Apart from making good music, it wasn’t clear what steps we should take to move forward.

To me, this summit is a cheat sheet of sorts. It’s a way to hear from people who have been there before, a chance to meet people who have been keeping this culture thriving.

These days, a musician is someone who wears many hats. It means being a promoter/ recording engineer/ merchandiser/gig organizer/sound guy/etc. Oh and on top of that, you have to magically create wonderful music.

Allow yourself the advantage of hearing from someone else’s experience. Learn from those who have been there before you.
