The longest running film festival in the Philippines, Cine Europa, will be taking place in Ayala Center Cebu Cinemas from Friday October 7 to Sunday October 9, 2016. This is the nineteenth year of the festival which is celebrating the 25th year of the arrival of European Union Delegation in the Philippines. Hence, the theme of the festival this year is “Friendship”. Twenty two films from around Europe will be shown for free, so get there early if you want to beat the crowds. The festival is showing in Cebu as part of the Cine Europa’s touring schedule which will travel to eleven Filipino cities.

The film I wish to highlight (showing on Sunday night, October 9, 2016 at 9:26pm in Cinema 1) is one that very beautifully explores the festival’s theme of friendship. The Lady in the Van, a British film, charts the unconventional, real life friendship between a famous playwright, Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings) and a homeless woman (Maggie Smith) who parks her van in the driveway of Bennett’s home. Expect a lot of amusing English eccentricity, funny and heart warming, with the usual masterclass in acting from Dame Maggie Smith of Downtown Abbey fame. A bonus, this is one of the few films in the festival where you don’t need to read the subtitles!
