We threw these questions to 5 locals — What do you usually do on a weekend? Do you enjoy a stay-cation? Or do you explore every nook and cranny of the city’s malls? Or do you find time to get away from the hustle and bustle? Read on below for their quick responses!
Nature is where I find peace and serenity. It’s a place where I can be what I want to be. So as much as possible, 2 to 3 times a month (weekends), I visit the great outdoors: beaches, mountains, etc. (Mostly Cebu) For me, nothing beats the beauty of nature. “Bahala outdated ko sa mga new movies ug newly-opened restos etc. Hahaha” If I’m not outdoors, I prefer staying at home where my bed and iPod are my best friends.

Since I only have a day off on Saturdays, I relax. Relaxing for me means simply staying at home. It’s the only time I don’t have news deadlines to beat unlike other days when everything is “hustle and bustle” as you say. So that’s me, a regular homie. You may call it boring. But at home, there are tons of chores to do. I prefer to stay in bed and stare at the ceiling, listen to good old music; hang out with my family, chit-chat and watch TV, wait for friends to invite me to bond with them, read a book, clean the house or enjoy the simple joys in life – like daydreaming, DVD marathon, eating potato chips, experimental cooking, drinking a cup of coffee, etc.

I play soccer on weekends. Usually pick-up games organized by fellow futbol enthusiasts in Cebu. Aside from the soccer games, the really cool thing about it is meeting other soccer freaks and occasionally getting to play a really competitive match against squads with multinational members. And secretly hoping they would give me one of their Lionel Messi jerseys.

I’m not much of a mallrat so I prefer going out of town on weekends to get a dose of the sun, sea and sand. It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and simply unwind and relax.

As much as I would like to say that my weekends are locked down to a usual pattern, I actually have no way of predicting how my next weekend would look like. One Saturday I could be displacing my whole week’s amount of work stress by pounding on that innocent punching bag in the gym, sort of like a deranged Mike Tyson. The next, I find myself dining at a fancy restaurant, all dolled up and sipping a glass of red wine. On more solemn weekends, I find myself at the beach talking to my soul (if I have any) and contemplating the most profound spiritual experience such as the ways of the Buddha or Tom Cruise’s manic obsession with Scientology. Ultimately I suppose, the way people spend their weekends, in some way, depicts who they truly are as persons and in my case, I’m nothing inside of a box.
