While we tend to think of comic book movies as light entertainment, they have pretty much been at the forefront of our pop culture vanguard in fleshing out the question of “What happens next?” X-Men envisioned humans moving forward but magnified superhuman, our genes changing us into mutants, in our physical and mental capabilities. Avengers: Age of Ultron, on the other hand, asks what if humanity ends with us, and, in our place, our creations live on, our robots, our data systems. What if the creatures outlive the creators?

If laughter is the indicator of a good comedy, then The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is a gem. While normally I am the sad man laughing at the references that the kids don’t get, this time around, I was glad to be able to take the my nephew to see one of his favourite cartoons. The manic enjoyment my nephew showed as he screamed while the movie was starting was well worth the admission. Indeed, there was a lot of good to shriek about in The SpongeBob Movie.

Prepare ye for an onslaught… of sequels. Yes, 2015 is set to be another “year of the sequels” with most of the biggest projected hits coming from a slew of blockbuster film franchises (The Avengers and Jurassic Park films are getting me particularly excited). The first of this gargantuan group is Divergent’s sequel Insurgent, and if this film is anything to go by, then the dearth of sequels is nothing of which we should be afraid.
