If you aren’t familiar with Happy Garaje, they are a design/illustration studio comprised of husband and wife team, Mark Deutsch and Johanna Velasco. It was founded in 2009 and also includes associate artist Karina Cuizon who joined in 2015. They’ve received numerous awards and distinctions, notably the Gold Award from The Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles, inclusion in the list of 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide for the years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 put together by the advertising index Luerzer’s Archive in Europe; and their work has been featured in notable publications such as Communication Arts, Semi-Permanent, Australia, BluPrint magazine, among others.

It’s now been two weeks since Prince passed away, and as with all celebrity deaths my social media feed was filled with all kinds of tributes and homages for the late great artist. People paid their respects through stories, artwork, photos, and song. But amidst all that, there were two that really stood out for me.

The combination of sounds and beats is akin to the colors and shapes that create a cohesive piece capable of evoking emotion. This has always been one of the main traits I look for when deciding whether a song is good or not. If it makes us wanna dance, makes us wanna love, or makes us wanna slap someone with a chair, it’s probably got something going for it.
