A photo exhibit on the state of mangroves in the Philippines opens on May 6, 2013 at Handuraw
Pizza, Cebu City. “Bakawan” is a fundraiser for Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation

The artists and organizers behind the event seeks to raise awareness on the importance of mangrove
forests not only to the environment but also to people’s lives. Mangroves (or bakawan in Filipino) are
communities of tropical, salt-tolerant trees and shrubs that grow in tidal flats along coastal lines.

Extremely productive ecosystems, mangrove forests play numerous key roles in both terrestrial and
marine environments. Some of the world’s most extensive collections of mangrove forests can be
found in Asian countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Unfortunately, there has been a
drastic decline in mangroves. In the Philippines, rate of loss is from 2,000 to 3,000 hectares per year.

Manmade activities are the major threat to mangroves. Deforestation, coastal infrastructure, pollution,
overharvesting and destruction of coral reefs are only few of the many causes of mangrove decline.
If mangroves disappear, there will be no feeding sites, habitats and nesting grounds for many wildlife
species including sea creatures. Since mangroves serve as buffer against storms, strong waves and soil
erosion, we will be at huge risk, given that the Philippines is affected by about 20 typhoons annually.

Reforestation is one of the possible solutions. Supporting environmental efforts like CCEF’s Adopt-
A-Mangrove project can go a long way. In this project, CCEF with local community, students, and
partner organizations visit sites that require community-based reforestation and rehabilitation of
degraded mangrove areas for tree planting, monitoring and other related activities.

Banilad Town Centre and Nikon’s Photography Workshops

 Banilad Town Centre, one of Cebu’s premier shopping places that offers a variety of shops and restaurants, and Nikon, a world leader in digital imaging, precision optics, and photo imaging technology, will hold two photography weekend workshops on April 13 to 14 and on May 18 to 19 with renowned and multi-awarded professional photographer, and Nikon Pro, Ted Madamba as lecturer.

The Photography Essentials Workshops will consist of both basic digital photography and basic studio lighting. Photography composition and subject placement will be taught during the 8-hour workshop on basic digital photography on April 13 to 14 from 10am to 6pm. A second seminar will also be conducted on basic studio lighting on May 18 to 19 from 10am to 6pm.

“Learning the basics of the art and science of photography is your road map to great captures” says Nikon Pro Ted Madamba, an award-winning photographer who has won several prestigious photo competitions both here and abroad who will be sharing his expertise in the upcoming workshops. He is a part – time mentor and the only Filipino mentor of Bigfoot’s International Academy of Film and Television. Some of his works are featured in both local and international newspapers and magazines. He was recently appointed to be part of Nikon pro – Phils.

The Photography Essentials Workshops will be an opportunity for aspiring photographers and photography enthusiasts to enhance their skills in photography.
