It’s been a great year for the Mactan food scene. Once a quaint little island that boasted one Jollibee and one McDonald’s (which didn’t come until later), Mactan as an island has grown into a respectable food hub in its own right. And I’m not talking about the super high-end restaurants you can find at resorts either. There’s tons of food places that people can enjoy without spending a small fortune; casual dining places that you’d usually find on the other side of the bridge.

I personally never thought this day would come, but it seems like we Mactan islanders don’t have to cross the channel to have good food, because they’re right here:

Let’s start off with my favorite ramen place in the city. SACHI, you had my heart the moment I tasted that Nouku Kotteri, and I’m not alone. This ramen and okonomiyaki house has been gaining a wild following over the last few years. They started out in a small house in Cabancalan, Mandaue but have now branched out to many parts of the city, including Mactan. Yes, there’s no need to brave the traffic or stand in line at their Ayala branch just to get your Japanese fix. If you’re from the island like me, you can get it right here.

The dessert gods have answered our prayers for a legit dessert place to finally open its doors to us islanders. The dessert scene in Lapu-Lapu had been limited to cafes like Starbucks or Bo’s, but we all know that their focus is coffee. With 10 DC opening a branch here, we finally have a dessert place to call our own. 10 DC Mactan is nice and cozy and with a selection of cakes to choose from, it brings their signature dainty vibe to the otherwise busy island.

La Marea

A little ways from 10 DC is La Marea. Hold your horses, it’s not open yet, but if their signage is any indication, we could be getting two dessert places within the year or so. Yay for warm brownie cups and oreo cakes with cream cheese frosting. 🙂

*UPDATE – It’s open!

Uke Hub Kafe

I found this one by accident and I’m thankful that I did. Uke Hub is a cafe full of ukuleles and guitars from Susing’s. It’s pretty small, but the vibe is great. They regularly host paint-your-own-ukulele events and other crafty stuff. They also hold acoustic gigs. Pretty nice for a little cafe, right?

Everything at Mactan Al Fresco, Basically

The people behind Mactan Newtown weren’t kidding when they said they’d be bringing good food to the island. The Al Fresco, located at the township in Maribago is home to city favorites like Meximama, Orange Karenderia, Choobi Choobi and Ayer’s Lechon to name a few. If you’re in for a quick bite, the Al Fresco is a great choice.

Bucket Shrimp

The Mactan branch of Bucket Shrimp is definitely my favorite. Located at Cebu Yacht Club, you can enjoy their signature juicy shrimps right on the water, with a spectacular view of Cebu and Mandaue city right across the channel. It can get kind of windy, but it’s a good trade off for the wonderful view. The food, as usual, is great. It’s perfect for barkada hangouts on a Friday night.

Burrow Lounge

Another great barkada place is Burrow Lounge, where you and your friends can stuff your face with chicken wings. It’s just straight-up fun. There’s a decent selection of flavors to choose from, but I’m partial to the garlic parmesan. Like most of the places on this list, it’s 5 minutes away from the airport and the second bridge, so you can get your chicken fix quick if you’re in the area.

Tom n Toms

Tom n Toms is probably the biggest coffee place in the island. It’s spacious with a big food and drink selection, it’s open 24/7 and most of all (this is the important bit) it’s got a lot of electric outlets! If you’re someone who does their work on their laptops, Tom n Toms is the perfect place for you. They even have parking! What more can you ask for?

10,000 Roses

Okay, I’m cheating. This is technically part of Cordova, but we’re close neighbors so what’s the harm? Any person who loves cute things would want to go to 10,000 Roses. It’s a perfect date place…if you happen to go there without the horde of people wanting to take photos of the pretty LED roses. Cordova sunset? City view? Done.
