Are you looking for a quiet place to study, surf the net or unwind with friends? Or are you just a coffee addict and have scoured the rest of Cebu for delicious brew? I bet you haven’t tried Café Maru – a pretty little coffee and tea shop just across Sto. Niño Village in Banilad.

Café Maru is owned by the similarly petite and pretty Korean named Seohee. Once inside, you are greeted by the wonderful aroma of coffee and the warm smile of Seohee. According to her, “maru” is a Korean word meaning “to sit on the floor.” Staying true to that, the café encourages you to sit on the floor over by the corner. You have a choice of books, magazines, board games (chess, scrabble and snakes & ladders) and puzzles to spend your time with.

The café is a dream come true for Seohee. She had always wanted to build a café where she could serve delicious coffee to friends and share her knack of collecting and making art. Because of her passion, the cafe has already garnered attention from coffee aficionados to fellow Koreans to students near the area (It’s a favourite study spot).

Menu and Price Range

Café Maru serves hot coffee, ice-blended coffee and tea. They also serve cakes and sweet breads. The prices are very affordable, ranging from 100 to 200 pesos. According to Seohee, they will be adding chocolate fondue to the menu very soon (Weee, I can’t wait to try that!).

We tried the raspberry mocha iced coffee; it’s a tall glass of iced-blended coffee with a tiny hint of raspberry – perfect for sharing! We also ordered the English rose tea. Their hot teas are guaranteed fresh as they use real rose petals. For dessert we tried a slice of their tiramisu, not too overpowering, just enough sweet chocolate with a layer of cream cheese. According to the owner those are their bestsellers (the ice-blends and tiramisu).
