We’ve been lamenting for a while now that it’s hard to find healthy food in our corner of the world. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a thick slab of lechon as much as the next guy, but as my dad would say, “Everything in moderation.” It’s good to finally have choices that feed the body and not just the stomach.
With good reason, the Echo Store has turned to one of our favorite stops. For anyone transitioning to a sustainable hearty lifestyle, they’ve got something for you. You can start off easy with veggie chips or go full tilt with an organic meal.
Before writing this post, I did a little digging. According to their website, ECHO is an acronym for Environment & Community Hope Organization. There’s a big emphasis on community here. Many of their wide variety of items are locally sourced and locally made. They’ve gone through the pains to find local suppliers for their breads, greens and even some of the products on the shelf (one of those products is the Sloane’s Chilli Shrimp Paste, named after the child of Mercado participants Lyka and Don – it’s good!).
There are tables and chairs where you can sit down and order to your heart’s desire. We mean that. Your heart will thank you for it. Many times we’ve dined there and just gotten a sandwich for takeout. A few times we’ve sat down and treated ourselves to a good meal.
You should seriously consider dropping by here before heading out to do your groceries. Many of their items are genuinely organic. All you need to do is ask the knowledgeable staff. They should be able to give you good descriptions of the items and even tell you where they came from.
If you catch them on a good day, they’ll have fresh organic lettuce straight from the farm and even all sorts of cheeses and meats. You probably won’t be able to find everything you need, but this is definitely worth the first stop before heading to a grocery store.
You can find Echo Store in the first floor of Streetscape, Ma. Luisa Road, Cebu City. It’s right before the entrance of Ma. Luisa. You can’t miss it.
